WHAT IS REFLEXOLOGY?
Reflexology is a complementary therapy based on the principle that specific points on the feet, hands and ears correspond to organs and systems of the body. By applying measured pressure and specialised techniques to these reflex points, a reflexologist aims to encourage relaxation, support circulation, reduce tension and promote the body's natural healing processes. Reflexology is non-invasive and typically performed without oils or creams (unless combined with a foot massage).
BRIEF HISTORY
Reflexology draws on ancient practices and was developed into a modern system in the early 20th century. Research shows reflexology can help reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep quality, and support pain management in some cases. It is best used as a complementary therapy — not a substitute for medical treatment.
BENEFITS OF REFLEXOLOGY
  • Deep relaxation and stress reduction
  • Improved sleep quality
  • Support for circulation and lymphatic flow
  • Reduced tension and muscle tightness
  • Pain management support (e.g., headaches, neck/back tension)
  • Support for digestive and reproductive systems in some clients
  • Enhanced sense of well-being and emotional balance
COMMON CONDITIONS SUPPORTED
  • General stress and anxiety
  • Insomnia and sleep disturbances
  • Chronic tension headaches and migraines (adjunctive)
  • Back, neck and shoulder tension
  • Digestive complaints (irregularity, bloating) when combined with lifestyle advice
  • PMS and menopausal symptoms (symptom support)
  • Complementary care during cancer treatment (with medical clearance)
WHAT TO EXPECT — YOUR FIRST SESSION
  • Arrival & Intake: A short intake form to record health history, current medications and treatment goals.
  • Consultation: A brief discussion to clarify symptoms, sensitivities and any contraindications.
  • Preparation: You’ll be seated or reclined in a comfortable chair. Feet (or hands) are cleaned and dried; shoes and socks are removed if working on feet.
  • The Session: Sessions usually last 45–60 minutes total; hands-on time is typically 30–45 minutes. The therapist uses thumb, finger and specialised techniques to stimulate reflex points and promote relaxation.
  • Experience: Most clients feel deep relaxation, warmth, tingling or gentle pressure. Some may feel emotionally released or sleepy.
  • Aftercare: It is important to drinks lots and avoid heavy meals after treatment. Mild detox-like reactions (temporary tiredness or increased urination) can occur; these typically resolve within 24–48 hours.
TYPICAL SESSION LENGTHS & FORMAT
  • Express: 30 minutes (focus on key areas)
  • Standard: 45–60 minutes (full foot reflexology session)
  • Extended: 75–90 minutes (reflexology plus consultation, or combined therapies)
  • Packages: Recommended 3–6 weekly sessions for chronic issues; maintenance as needed
REFLEXOLOGY TECHNIQUES WE USE
  • Thumb-walking and finger-walking for precise stimulation
  • Rotation and kneading to release tension in reflex zones
  • Holding and sustained pressure for sensitive points
  • Zone therapy mapping (foot/hand reflex maps)
  • Gentle lymphatic stimulation when indicated
  • Modifications for pregnancy, older adults and sensitive clients
CONTRAINDICATIONS & PRECAUTIONS Do not book reflexology or consult your therapist without medical approval for the following conditions:
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or recent blood clotting issues
  • Uncontrolled or rapidly changing blood pressure without clearance
  • Infectious conditions affecting the feet/hands (e.g., cellulitis)
  • Open wounds, recent fractures, severe osteoporosis in the treatment area
  • Active cancer under treatment — requires direct permission from oncologist and a therapist experienced in oncology reflexology
  • First trimester of pregnancy — many reflexologists avoid treatment in early pregnancy; second and third trimester may be okay with practitioner experience
  • Severe circulatory disorders, neuropathy or diabetic foot complications — clearance required Always inform your reflexologist about medications, pregnancy, pacemakers, implants and recent surgeries.
